Local 338 - bettering the lives of our members and all working people!

New Local 338 Medical Call Center Hours

Please be aware that as of Monday, February 1, 2010 the Local 338 Medical Call Center will now be open from 8:30 A.M. until 4:30 P.M.

Please Help the Haitian Earthquake Relief Efforts

On Tuesday, January 12 Haiti was struck by a series of catastrophic earthquakes. Much of the country currently lay in ruins and thousands of people have been injured or killed. Millions of men, women, and children are now homeless and without life's basic necessities, including food and medical attention.

Haiti is a poor country and a natural disaster of this magnitude is particularly devastating. It will take a global effort to help in its recovery and rebuilding. It is important that Local 338 and the labor movement stand strong with our brothers and sisters in Haiti. Local 338 is asking you to make a donation to one of the organizations listed below. Whatever amount you can give is essential to the relief efforts that will provide the necessary aid to the people of Haiti.

The following organizations are accepting contributions for Haiti Relief and Development Efforts (Please click the name of the organization to visit their donation website):

Checks can also be sent to:
Solidarity Center Education Fund

888 16th Street, N.W., Suite 400
Washington, DC 20006

Please note in the memo line of the check:  "Earthquake Relief for Haitian Worker Fund"

NYC Central Labor Council Haitian Disaster Relief Fund

The Importance of Getting Involved

Our political system exists to provide each of us with a voice. Through this voice we can bring about the changes that will better our lives and communities. The simplest way this voice can be exercised is by voting in any upcoming elections. There are, however, other ways to be politically active that are equally as important.  PAC, or Political Action Committee, is funded by contributions from many of our members. The money collected is then used to support candidates who embody the values of the labor movement and understand the unique needs of working families. Perhaps, the most important way to make your voice hear is by attending political events. This includes volunteering on campaigns and attending rallies and public hearings. Such events are the most direct way to show your support for important issues that affect you.

Your political involvement helps gain Local 338 recognition within the political community. It makes a bold statement to both elected officials and the public that Local 338 and its members stand strong on certain issues. As a result, officials from the local, state, and even federal government are more willing to sit down and work with us in order to create and fight for legislation that both benefits and protects working families and our communities.

It is important to understand that by being active, you are not simply helping Local 338. A few months ago, one of our employers began considering closing one of their stores. Thankfully, we were able to turn to one of the local Congressman who intervened on our behalf to negotiate with the employer to keep the store open. Had it not been for our close relationship with this member of Congress which, was aided by your political involvement, many of our hard working members would have undoubtedly lost their jobs. By voting, contributing to PAC, and attending various political events, you are helping to make a direct and positive impact on your own life.

Often work and family responsibilities keep us from being as involved as we would like. Yet, it is essential that we become even more politically active than we are currently in order to see further progress for America's working men and women. We can positively impact the future and ensure that our children are guaranteed the rights and protections we enjoy.

To learn more about how to be more politically active, speak to your Union Representative or contact Joe Fontano at (516) 294-1338 ext. 269.
