I want to begin by wishing everyone a very healthy, happy and joyous holiday season and a happy New Year. 2009 was a turbulent year for the nation, the economy as well as our union. As the New Year rolls around we hope that our will country continue on the road to recovery and that the millions of unemployed again able to return to work.
In these uncertain economic times, our union has been fighting to protect jobs and to keep our members working. We have been working with some employers to make sure they stay in business and survive the down economy. We have used our political influence and elected officials to pressure stores and plants into remaining open, keeping thousands of members working at companies like Duane Reade, Farmland Dairies, King Kullen, and Waldbaum's.
It is only because of our political action that thousands of our members still have jobs and are able to enjoy the benefits they have today. If you have not signed up for our political action committee (PAC), I ask that you do so. For the cost of a cup of coffee, 50¢ a week, you can help us make an investment in your future and maybe save your own job.
On December 31st two of local 338 staff members will be retiring, Frank Spadaccini and Ernesto Mattace. These two gentlemen have given of themselves over and over again to help our union and our members. We will miss them and wish them many years of good health and happiness. Frank has been with us for 10 years and has served the Long Island stores with enthusiasm, good humor and dedication.
Over 39 years, Ernie Mattace has been an organizer, a business representative, and for the last 10 years our Political Director. In each position he has displayed an extraordinary dedication to the members and this Union. Ernie and I worked together back in 1972-73 in Hills supermarkets in Huntington, it seems like only yesterday but time moves on and we will all miss him.
No one knows what to expect in this coming year but with your help and support we will continue to fight for good contracts, good benefits and the dignity and respect you our members deserve.
