New York's New Paid Family Leave

Date: Wednesday December 27, 2017

On January 1, 2018, New York’s Paid Family Leave Program will take effect. Working families will no longer have to choose between caring for their loved ones and paying their bills each month.

New York’s Paid Family Leave provides job-protected, paid time off so you can:
• bond with a newly born, adopted or fostered child;
• care for a close relative with a serious health condition; or
• assist loved ones when a family member is deployed abroad on active military service.

In 2018, eligible employees can take up to eight weeks of time off at 50% of their average weekly wage, with these benefits increasing each year for the next four years.

This program acts as an insurance policy that we all contribute to, so we encourage you to take advantage of the program if you’ve recently had a baby or are caring for an elderly parent or loved one. For more information about paid family leave and eligibility requirements, speak to your Union or Funds Representative!
