fighting wal-mart

The Fight Against Walmart!

Walmart has proven time and time again that it is NOT a working family friendly organization. A burden to the public healthcare system, Walmart does not offer affordable medical benefits; and pays poverty level wages seen by the number of employees on public assistance. The company also puts local merchants out of business.

In addition, Walmart has an extremely poor labor record. In 2004, legal action was taken against the company after they locked employees inside the store without keys. A class action lawsuit was filed claiming that women at both Walmart and Sam’s Club were paid and promoted less than their male counterparts were. The lawsuit covers nearly 1.5 million women who worked or once worked for Walmart. Furthermore, they have been sued for not providing employees with paid breaks for meals and rest as required by law and have violated child labor laws by allowing minors to work more than what is allowed by law.

Now, Walmart is once again trying to build in New York City, a major concern for local business owners and communities in all 5 boroughs. They have formed an extremely large campaign using  fancy advertisements and a webist hoping to garner support for opening a store in New York City.

Walmart promises to  revive neighborhoods around the country and create jobs- but their rhetoric doesn’t match reality. The fact is when Wal-Mart comes in, small businesses disappear. Walmart kills 3 jobs for every 2 poverty-wage job it creates. In Chicago, Walmarts entry had devastating effects on the community putting 25% of local shops out of business and research has revealed that Walmart reduces retail employment by 2.7 percent, in a single county!

If Walmart is successful in opening a store in Brooklyn it will be much easier for the company to build in areas that may perhaps be a lot closer to your own stores or businesses. We need to be united: a threat to one community is a threat to all of us.
